When Should I Upgrade to Magento® 2?

Magento 2 Upgrade

When is the right time to migrate to Magento 2?

A question many business owners using the Magento platform have to ask themselves. Knowing that Magento 1 will no longer be supported later this year, it’s a good idea to start thinking and planning for your migration. Unlike other Magento upgrades, this one is unique because it’s a whole new platform. The process will take longer than standard upgrades in the past because moving to Magento 2 is a brand new build.

Define Your Ecommerce Goals

Before you start to engage in a new website, it’s important to evaluate the goals of your business. Are there current struggles? What could you do better? What do you want to do better? Perhaps it’s staying up-to-date with security patches, capturing more mobile sales or adding new functionality. Whatever it may be, it’s important to clearly define and document your goals and requirements for the Magento upgrade.

Website Optimization - Clean Time

Migrating is also a good opportunity to “clean house.” Leave behind the unused extensions and strip out obsolete code that is no longer needed, or perhaps even duplicated. The more that can be left behind equals savings due to the fact you no longer have to build features that are not adding value to your business. So ask yourself, what is working well with your current store and what isn’t? Is there a feature that you had built that perhaps isn’t adding as much value to consumers that you thought it would? Defining what is no longer “essential” to have, or what can be done better will help you gain clarity and direction about the future of your business. If you need help defining this, Swarming Technology would be more than willing to help perform an audit or discovery on your site.

Other Magento 2 Upgrade Considerations

If you are looking to add new functionality to your ecommerce store or implement a redesign, a migration to Magento 2 could be the right time to implement these changes instead of investing on your current platform and doing duplicate work.

Other primary factors to consider include your timeline and urgency. As mentioned earlier, a Magento 2 build will take longer than past Magento upgrades. On average, a build can be done in about 3–6 months. That being said, with support ending in November 2018 for Magento 1, agency timelines are filling up fast. It’s a good idea to start a conversation with your development agency on your plan to migrate, if you have not done so already.

While you may be thinking, I still have time to think about this migration, I challenge you to think what happens when Magento 1 is no longer supported? How do you plan to maintain security and build out new functionality?

Many developers are already focusing on building Magento 2 extensions and increasing functionality on the platform, so less innovation will be done in Magento 1. As such, Magento itself has not launched new features into the Magento 1 platform since last year.

In general, the Magento community is excited about the endless options that can be achieved on the new platform, as well as the ability to grow overtime with emerging technologies such as headless commerce.
