Magento 2 Open Source vs. Magento 2 Commerce: What is Right for You?

Magento 2 Open Source vs. Magento 2 Commerce

You’ve looked through all of your ecommerce platform choices. You’ve weighed all of your options. And you’ve finally made a decision…Magento is the right platform for your business. Its flexibility and scalability give you the best chance at rapid growth. The next question is, should I be using Magento Open Source or Magento Commerce?

You can see a quick rundown of features between Magento Open Source and Magento Commerce right on the Magento website here, but that really doesn’t give you a guide into what edition makes the most sense for your business. There are so many different factors and nuances to take into considering, a simple list of features usually isn't enough. Talking with a Magento service integrator will be your best bet for making this decision, but here are some good things to think about and ask yourself if making the jump to Magento Commerce the right way to go for your business.

Enhanced Site Content

While Magento Open Source does include a content management system, it is certainly not the strongest aspect of the Open Source platform. Magento is trying to solve this with the introduction of its new Page Builder feature in Magento Commerce. It allows users to more easily create CMS pages and manage static CMS blocks by giving you an easy, drag-and-drop interface to manage your content. Staging and preview content is another Magento Commerce feature that’s very beneficial if you have many different users creating content that needs to be approved before going live. Finally, if you want to personalize and segment content to different groups of users–potentially show different content to different geolocations or giving special banners to users who have ordered a certain amount–this advanced segmentation is also offered only in Magento Commerce.

Are you selling B2B?

This is the easiest question when deciding between Magento Commerce and Open Source. The B2B module for Magento is only available for the Commerce edition and is critical to businesses who operate advanced B2B ecommerce stores. If your website is selling to B2B users that need to group into different companies in your admin panel and allow those customers multiple associated users with varying permissions, then Commerce would be the right way to go. The B2B module also gives customers a quick order option for ordering multiple SKUs at once, allows for B2B users to set up requisition lists to quickly purchase items they have purchases in the past, and gives an extremely robust quoting feature to give you and your customers a way to discuss and manage large orders.

Loyalty and Rewards Programs

Does your business rely on a rewards program, gift registries, or private sales?

All of these features come out-of-the-box with Magento Commerce. So if you are looking for an easy way to allow your visitors to earn rewards points or let users create gift registries, then Commerce may be worth the investment. However, there are many extensions that offer similar functionality to these standard, out-of-the-box Magento Commerce features. Speaking with Magento Solutions Consultant at Swarming can help determine the most efficient and cost-effective approach.

Looking to the Future

How many website visitors, products, orders, and customers does your website have now? How many do you expect to have a year from now or three years from now?

You want a platform that not only fulfills your business needs now, but will be flexible for expansion as your business grows. Sometimes, looking at what tools you need right now is too short-sighted. You may not need complicated customer segmentation or enhanced reporting now, but will you need those tools in the near future? Going with Magento Open Source because of immediate cost savings could actually cost you more money if you want to migrate to the Commerce edition in the future. You may lose out on customers and orders by not having the tools you need to effectively run your site. Always be thinking about the long-term success of your website.

All of these questions can be tricky to understand how they related your specific business needs. Is Magento Commerce worth the investment? Or can I get most of what I’m looking for with a good service integrator using Magento Open Source? This is a critical question during the outset of your Magento implementation. The best route is always talking with an experienced Magento service integrator and certified Magento Solutions Consultant to make the best decision for your website.
